I had just recently written about the practice of those who auto unfollow on Twitter once they’ve got you to follow them back. I have counted at least ten of these happenings since I posted that article. So what do you do to build your list of those who will stay following?
There is a new site TwitterFollower just released by John Chow that will go a long way towards building a list of followers that will follow you back. I just signed up so I can’t say too much on whether the site will work or not but seeing as The Chow had a hand in it I have to believe it’s going to be a worth while service.
So the big question, how much does it cost? The big answer, nothing, nada, the wonderful word FREE. A site others would definitely charge for comes free of charge from John.

Just re-tweeted thank you for the information, I am constantly looking for new twitter tools. Just signed up and began the very simple process.
That tool was certainly a good one, I added a lot of people in one day that I would not have otherwise.
Wow! Let me check that site out. Thanks for sharing sir!

Crap, just people who WILL follow you if you follow them.
I just joined that site a few hours ago. Got about 20 or 30 followers so far.

What I’ve been doing is picking a follower that I have some sort of connection with, whether it’s marketing, another female entrepreneur, bloggers, or just someone that enjoys self development as much as I do…I pick ones that have quite a few followers, then follow all their followers (or at least some). I give it a few days then go back and use either TwitterKarma or Qwitter to find out which ones are mutual follows. If they didn’t follow me back, I may or may not unfollow depending on how much value I can see in their tweets. Sometimes I give some a few more days to follow back, but then…if they’re not checking new followers or staying up to date then do I really want to keep following??
I know it’s not quite the same, but seems to be working for me and keeps me in the same niche I’m in for the most part.

Yea I also use Qwitter. If your going to use Twitter you need to pay attention to both who follows and unfollows you. I usually give them a few days to a week to return.
I’m glad it doesn’t cost anything, but it also gives John chow an added venture to his resume…how does he do it lol..

Cause he is the go to guy, once you’ve reached his level and respect people flock to you.
Man, I don’t want people to follow me just because I follow them. I want them to follow me because they like the stuff I come up with and they sit on the end of their seats waiting for the next juice bit of 140 characters that emerge from my two finger typing sensation. Sorry Chow old chum, but I don’t have any use for your new site, which is why I didn’t join even after those numerous tweets

I agree with you Sire. Having a loyal follower not because of your offer or a certain freebie or gimmick is an added value to your credibility.

Numbers are always impressive to outsiders though. Can’t really expand much outside unless you have something to really show. Having a balance of follow and followed may just look like you went around having a bunch of people join you because you joined them (which they did) but they’d want to give the impression that people are following them because of some other reason (Which they try to make up).
This is probably the mind set of the auto unfollowers. Appear like a leader because you don’t have any others that you follow.
I understand what most of you are saying here concerning getting followers because of an “offer or a certain freebie or gimmick”, but let’s be real…a big part of marketing deals with perceptions which is why so many use tactics like these. Then once they are perceived to be in a certain positive standing, then they start following the LAW OF ETHICS BIBLE – L.O.L!
I have a long standing motto to only do what works;however, that doesn’t apply to things that only work temporarily while creating negative effects such as irreparable damage to one’s reputation in the long run

I’ve come across a brilliant Twiiter tool. Commentluv will pick up the link to the post, but basically with this too in hand you can subscribe to bloggers of your choice, who are also using the tool, and be notified immediately via twitter when they publish a post. As long as they are subscribed to you they also will be notified when you publish a post.
