I want people to read my blog. This is a question or rather a statement a reader posed to me in a recent email. The full text went like this.
I started blogging about six months ago and it is now, as it was then, just for fun. I don’t care about PR, SEO, or any of the other letters. I just want people to read my blog.
I think us “How To” bloggers sometimes forget when writing our how to that there still is a good portion of bloggers who blog just for the fun of it and don’t care about certain factors like building a sites authority. They just want people to read their blog’s, so I’m going to tackle this straight on with no fluff.
How Do I Get People To Read My Blog
Lets throw all that SEO, PR, and other site building techniques out the window for now and focus on the simple task of getting people to read a blog.
There is no science behind it and it’s not overly difficult with a little work. I have a few suggestions I will offer up and I’m sure my everyday readers and fellow “How To’s” will add some of their own.
1. Comment On Blogs – Yes it does seem to always come back to commenting with regards to blogging and for good reason. Many bloggers are really good about returning a comment to your blog after you leave one on theirs, so by reading others blogs you will in essence get people reading your blog.
2. Join BlogCatalog – This is a great community to join to interact with other bloggers and get your blogs name out there. There are groups of all kinds to join, trade comments, links, info, ect.
3. Promote It – I know this sounds like work and it is, blogging even just for fun is work. Submit your site to directories and your individual posts to various social networks. Your bound to get the attention of people interested in reading what you have to say.
4. Make It Interesting – It really should start here, writing something worth reading. If it’s not that interesting why would anyone want to read it. Sure it may be interesting to you but if you want others to read it it must also be for them.
5. Keep At It – If you want people to read your blog it’s going to take time. Blogging is not an over night thing. Keep plugging away at it, with time and some work they will read your blog.
These are just a few of my tips. Be sure to check back and read the comments as I know my readers will have some great suggestions.

the last point can really be the hardest to follow but its very important! keeping at it will not only show future readers that you are dedicated, but you are consistent in your work and a reliable source.

I’d also add….be unique! Don’t try to follow the A-list bloggers…develop your own unique blogging voice and stand out from the rest of the thundering herd.

The “promote your blog” is the hardest thing to do. just like him i also started with “just for fun” motive but it’s really good if others read it as well. what’s the use of writing them when it’s just you who sees it. that’d be a sad story.

Although PageRank is not important, but the higher PR you have, the faster other bloggers will find your site and they will read it.
HI Michael.
I think some other ways to make people comment in your site is reward them for doing so. Like you, right now you have the Top Commentator widget, comment love and you interact with your commenters.
A commenter will come for more if they see you answer his inquiries as fast as you can. For new commenters seeing that you do actually interact with other commenters will make them feel that this is a real community and he can be too an important part of your “Blogger Family”. All this makes them want to comment and keep coming.

Good tips, all of them. But I have a question about BlogCatalog. I am on there, but how do you use it to the best benefit? Same with Technorati…still trying to figure that one out!
What do you think about advertising your blog? Would you ever buy and place banners to promote your blog??

oh, and as you see, I figured out how to fix the comment / feed issue!! Yay! thx for your help!
I think we all want more people to read our blogs, that I think is the main objective.
I personally run my blog for fun and if I can make money on the side line then it’s a bonus. My earnings will speak for themselves as I have never made more than $5 since starting it. Sounds bad but it’s true. If I make some money, then I would probably just make sure it pays for the domain name and hosting.
I offer my commenter’s a link back to their site using CommentLuv and I have a DoFollow plugin also installed. I can say that these 2 combinations has brought me more comments than before. I do my best to comment on loads of blogs and try and visit new blogs/sites (this is how I came across your site).
Yes CommentLuv and being a DoFollow blog is rewarding for both parties and invites those to be more active in leaving comments.
Hi Michael,
I agree with you that comment on blogs, will create back link to our blog.
Thank
I like the way you did this article, straight to the point. Commenting on blogs is the best way to get people to read your blog and comment on your blog.

Excellent article, one of the key things that changed having readers and not having readers for my blog was commenting. Commenting makes a big difference, I appreciate those who comment on my blog and always return the gesture, that simple cycle alone makes a huge difference.
I agree, when it comes to commenting I do try to return it. And because of that I get to discover some content I otherwise may not have.
nice and inspirational…
i was always wanted that someone should read my blog.
bt i think nw i should do it just for my interest..
thanx dude
I just came across your blog through a Google search – I would agree that commenting (thoughtfully and in a relevant way) is a great way to build a network. I actually carve out 30 minutes in the morning to read and comment (if appropriate) on my favorite blogs. Thanks for these suggestions!

I cannot believe this will work!
These are all great ideas! I am new to blogging and am only doing it not because I like to write, but because I think I have an interesting topic!
