10 Reasons Why You Should Leave Blog Comments

If you’ve been blogging for any amount of time your very familiar with blog comments. You’ve both left them and hopefully received them but you may be unclear why this action is important. I’m going to give you 10 Reasons Why You Should Leave Blog Comments and how this action benefits you, others, and the entire blogging world.

10 Reasons Why You Should Leave Blog Comments

1. Do Unto Others – The old adage holds true, if you have a blog I’m sure you want visitors to comment on yours, so it’s only fair to comment on others. Give like you’d like to receive.

2. It’s A Mini Community – Blogging isn’t one way street, we don’t write to just be read. Every time you go to a new blog you enter a little world, one were interaction is welcomed. Leaving a comment makes you part of the community.

3. Builds Relations – The best way to make friends, partners, or any other relation is by leaving blog comments. I’ve been fortunate to make some great friends and it all started by leaving a comment on their blog or vise versa.

4. Builds Your Comments – A take on #1, if you comment on others blogs more times then not they will return the comment. This in turn helps to build your blog, with traffic and yes comments.

5. Builds Your Name – How often do you comment and see the same person everywhere you go? I bet you had to go to their blog to check them out! It’s a way to get your name out there and draw attention to yourself and blog. The more you leave blog comments the more your seen.

6. Content Ideas – I have seen this more then a few times. Where comments were left that lead to some great content ideas for myself. Had I not been commenting I would have probably never come across them.

7. Who You Might Meet – A great point you may have never considered. I recently left a comment on a blog that actually led to a job. You comment, others comment, you never know what or who you might meet.

8. You Have A Voice – Have you ever read a blog, disagreed with it, and clicked away with a huff and puff? The whole reason for comments on blogs is so your voice can be heard. It’s your opportunity to say what you think, feel, or question about what you just read.

9. Learn More – We get the bulk of our information from the content itself but you also are able to learn from the comments. Often comments are left from those with a different knowledge set, who can add too or present a different view. If those blog comments were not left we would be missing out on that extra knowledge.

10. Life Line – Quite honestly my belief is, without comments, blogging would die off. Sure you could still write and people would still read but something would be missing and feel incomplete. It’s blog comments that keep blogging alive and breathing.

Your Comments On Commenting

Of course I’d love your comments on commenting. The point of this isn’t a call to get more comments here but rather a reminder to those why the act of commenting is good and should be done.

I agree with getting your name out there. Without this blog I started, i would not have got in touch with a reader in California who was able to set up a meeting with developer that I did not know about.

My 2 reasons “why you should leave blog comments”, if you don’t mind:

    1. Relations

Blog commenting is a feedback between blogger and readers. You can’t build popular blog if you don’t know what people think, like, want, need, etc. Comments give possibility to ask questions and express ideas. It’s not possible to build relations without commenting.

    2. Backlinks

CommentLuv, Dofollow, Top Commentators attract bloggers like free candies attract children. What else bloggers need? :]

Very good point, backlinks. A little selfish but nothing wrong with “give a little get a little”.

    For new bloggers,

Right after putting some great content on your own blog, the next thing you should do is start finding blogs with similar interests and start commenting. It’s essential in becoming a part of the community, and on DoFollow blogs, in building good backlinks to your site.

I appreciate when someone leaves a rather opposite opinion of mine as a comment on one of my posts. That is what I want, people to think and be exposed to new ideas…including myself. Good topic.

Number 8 is important but when leaving a comment it is good to remember that you are entering another persons domain, their cyber home so to speak, and keeping that in mind one should always leave a civil comment, especially when disagreeing with something.

Well outlined. Comments are blogs life, literally. It just show’s your blog presence and impact on the web. But my concern is this; if you are running a blog for some kind of a online reputation management, and someone comments a negative thing, would you delete it?or leave it on your blog and answer them?

Not commenting on a blog after you have browsed around and read it, would be like joining Twitter and then just watching all the Twits tweet but never tweeting yourself. Making you in the truest sense a TWIT.

When I first started my blog I was pretty on the down low with it, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it and I never really took the time to look at others blogs. Now I am a complete addict, constantly in search of something good to read and seeing someone else’s views on things. I enjoy reading others blogs more than I enjoy writing my own, with that comes the commenting. If I read a blog post on someone’s blog it’s because I liked the content, why not support that content and the writer by saying, “Hey great article”.

  18. Bloggington

I agree with a lot of this. Blogging has evolved to become, above all, a social, even communal, activity. You have to commune with your readers, and commenting is one way to do this.

  21. Work At Home Blog

I think building relations and belonging to a community is very important. It makes blogging less virtual than it really is. Better still if you know someone living in your area, you could pick up the phone and call the person. Also blog commenting is an excellent way to promote your blog and work. You can write the best contents but it means nothing if not many people see or read your work.

It seems everywhere I turn I am seeing a blog about leaving comments, which tells me that I am on the right track. One of the most difficult things for me, as a new blogger, is to figure out what readers really want to read about. I’ve found that by reading other’s blogs and the comments left there it gives me a good idea as to what people are interested in. No comments could mean no traffic, or it could mean that it just wasn’t that interesting.

I’ve also found other great blogs by reading the comments that I probably would have never found! Thanks for your tips. As usual, your advice is right on!

Not so sure Michael, the backup did not help as it’s only monthly according to the technician support. Thank you for leaving us the first comment on our site too.

Do you use WordPress? If so you can backup as often as you like with WordPress Database Backup plugin. I do a few times a week.

@ Brian and Jennifer, I had a similar issue except it was my blog posts that disappeared and I posted a solution that worked both times. Perhaps it can work for you…when you read it (by clicking on my CommentLuv link) instead the ‘post tables’ select ‘comments’ table and see if that works…
