Have you ever signed up for and downloaded a FREE “how to blog” eBook or better yet paid for one? More then likely you have. I’ve myself have downloaded countless eBooks on how to blog, SEO, generating traffic, you name it. The verdict?
Few Good, A Lot Of Bad, And Way Too Many Ugly
It’s heavily stressed to write an eBook, to build reputation, build an email list, and yes to make money. All great reasons but to often those are the only reasons people create an eBook. They forget the most important reason, the reader.
It really amazes me how many awful and worthless eBooks are produced. Many are nothing more then regurgitated material from other eBooks. My personal favorite has to be the 100 pages of how I made it, promises of fame and riches, pure fluff only at the end to try and sell you what you thought you were initially downloading in the first place.
I’m currently in a heated debate with myself as to whether to produce and eBook. The few Good eBooks I’ve downloaded were what they intended to be, a help and benefit. I’m really curious as to how others view eBooks, more specifically in regards to the “how to blog”.

It’s true that there are too many e-books out there… which can be a good thing, as it provides more options. However, as mentioned sometimes its the design and quality of the ebook that counts as well. Overall, ebooks do make life easier.. to a certain extent. thanks for sharing!

Free ebook giveaway is really good to start building your list. While the quality of the book is really important, I guess one shouldn’t ask for too much if it has to be free.

I have never paid for one, and the ones that I did read all seemed to be the same general book just with different wording. They are good resources for starters.

I have downloaded many free ebooks. Many were and provided things I already knew. I offer a free ebook myself. Great way to build a mailing list. Without any real promotion as of yet. I have a mailing list of 100+

I absolutely hate redundant information and that’s what it seems like these ebooks ONLY have..I RARELY get taught something new..I don’t even read them anymore, I just scan them..

many ebooks are re-works but there are also some that have greatly helped me out like the Ultimate Supertips for example…but a more recent one that’s really got me going is the free CPA Marketing ebook.
It’s a subject matter I’ve been wanting to socialize about because it’s much easier to get someone to signup for something w/o having to pull out their credit cards than it is to make an actual sale on something

Thanks for sharing those two, going to look into them myself.
I’ve read hundreds, free and otherwise. I can usually glean at least a nugget or two from each. I think people in general expect too much, especially for free.
Thanks for the links.

That’s true, if it’s free you really don’t lose out on anything.
Funny, we mentioned free e-books in passing in our most recent post as well. We don’t mind free e-books, it’s actually a great way to assess what the “non-free” items are going to look like.
But we haven’t bought anything; most everything can be found for free on the net if you take the effort.

I’ve never downloaded an ebook about blogging and I don’t see any need to. There is so much that you can learn online by visiting and commenting on other peoples blogs and I much prefer the interaction than trying to wade through an ebook.

I don’t know if you will approve this comment, but I don’t buy traffic, I don’t participate in traffic exchanges, I don’t send out spam emails,I don’t offer e-books, I don’t engage in questionable or black hat tactics, I seldom seek JV partners, I never seek inbound links, I blog when I feel like it, my SEO happens automatically,
I don’t solicit sales, sales just happen.

I don’t pay for ebooks. I’ve read a few and while some are actually really fantastic, there are way too many that are affiliate loaded fluff. I think “ebooks” have the potential to be fantastic resources. I just sometimes wish that, like real publications, they were taken more seriously. These days anyone can write a seven-page “book” and sell it for a ridiculous amount of money. Think about the problogger book and how valuable that is. That’s a resource from/for the internet that we should treat as a precedent.

Hi Michael, I do believe in writing ebooks, this does not means I can forget about the quality and unique information to put into the ebook. But if you are not paying a dime for an ebook, then how can we ask too much? Will you ask for the return of your money, oops if it were free then thats what they going to give you back “Nothing”, lol.

I feel eBooks can be a great asset, if done with the reader in mind. Even if it’s free, when you are promised knowledge and spend your time (which is of value) and receive nothing I think that is wasteful.
I think ebooks are definitely worth the effort of writing them because it always feels like it has greater value – probably because it’s more of a publication than post. It’s not at all difficult either because if you were to write a few posts – that could easily translate into an ebook.
